Details

The project

Whitfield Aspen School’s new extension provides eight classrooms and four group rooms, expanding its specialist SEN facilities and mainstream primary provision.

Appointed by WW Martin, ECO MEP delivered the mechanical and electrical services for the development. The brief brought together heating, ventilation, lighting and safety systems to support an inclusive learning environment.

An integrated approach to classroom comfort

The heating solution combines Kronoterm air source heat pump technology with Monodraught ventilation units. ECO MEP installed 20 HVR Zero APX Hybrid Ventilation Units, with heating pipework supplying their coils and conditioned air distributed through ceiling grilles.

ADR Consulting Engineers describes a changeover arrangement that enables the Kronoterm heat pumps to provide heating during colder months and comfort cooling in summer. Linking these functions with the ventilation system creates a coordinated approach to fresh air and temperature control in the teaching spaces.

Concept

Commercial heat pump technology for education

ECO MEP identifies Whitfield Aspen School as its second UK installation of Kronoterm ADAPT MAX, following the Jubilee Resource Hub in Maidstone.

Designed for larger buildings, ADAPT MAX combines modular construction with heating and cooling capability. The range incorporates noise management technology to reduce sound and vibration, alongside configurable capacity and intelligent controls. These features make it relevant to education projects where building services must balance thermal comfort, operational demands and the surrounding environment.

Coordinated delivery

The extension’s services were connected with the school’s existing infrastructure. Alongside the mechanical installation, ECO MEP delivered dedicated electrical sub-metering, LED lighting with classroom daylight dimming and absence control, and integrated safety and communications systems.

Handed over in September 2025, the extension adds purpose-built learning spaces supported by coordinated building services.
